The Sun-Maid Raisin Girl
Arguably one of the hottest women to grace food packaging (all while wearing a bonnet), the Sun-Maid Raisin Girl also has the distinction of being based on a real person: Lorraine Collett Petersen. Back in 1915, Lorraine was drying her hair in her parents’ backyard when she was discovered and asked to pose for a painting while holding a basket of grapes. (File that under “things that would be totally weird if they happened today.”) Her likeness was introduced to Sun-Maid products in 1916. The brand image was redesigned three times since inception, with the current version finalized in 1970. That version is not based on Lorraine, but a young woman who worked for Sun-Maid’s packaging supplier named Delia von Meyer. She was discovered at work in the 1960s by the designer who was tasked with refashioning the logo. Other variations include the animated Sun-Maid girl in these creepy ads and Natalie Dee’s cartoon, “I Got Yer Raisins Right Here.”
